Inpatient falls are a common occurrence and a significant cost to healthcare establishments. In 2011 the National Patient Safety Agency issued a rapid response report i.e. NPSA/2011/RRR0001. Approximately 208,000 patient falls were occurring in acute hospitals, a significant number resulting in moderate to severe injury and even death. Investigation had revealed that injuries were being missed following a patient fall leading to inappropriate recovery from floor level especially when spinal injuries are suspected.

This presentation will look at the approach taken by a large acute hospital trust to improve the post fall recovery of injured patients. The intervention included the use of algorithms and air assisted devices. The overall objective was to develop a safer system that would not exclude the recovery of bariatric persons.
